Client Info: How to set up the client for optimum performance.

Translation Server: This section discusses the how to disable the Translation Server related functions, which cause numerous text related errors for some players.

Client Info and Configuration

This setup recommendation will ensure your playtime is as stable as possible and it will reduce lag for yourself and everyone else playing.

First of all, hit ALT-O to bring up your client options menu.

1) Top left Icon. Sound. Looks like a clarinet/trumpet: Make sure "Play footstep sounds" is not ticked.

2) Second Icon down from the left. Looks like a large exclamation mark: Make sure only "Make Text persisant" is ticked in here

3) Third Icon down from the left. The Giant "A": Untick -everything- in here. Legacy/Sphere does not use it, need it, support it.

4)Fourth Icon down from the left. A head symbol: Nothing needs to be done here.

5) Bottom left Icon. Curved arrow: Nothing needs to be done here in the context of reducing lag [This is where you create your in game macro keys]

6) Top right icon. Computer Mouse symbol: Make sure "Run mouse in a seperate thread" -is- ticked. The rest of the settings are personal preference and have no bearing on bandwidth.

7) Second icon down from the right. Large Eye symbol: Unless you are having video card probs. Leave the top three boxes unticked. The rest of the settings are personal preferences except for the bottom two. Make sure "Dark Nights" is UNTICKED. And "Coloured Lighting" -is- ticked.

8) Third down from right. Man in a triangle symbol: Nothing needs to be done here in the context of lag reduction or client stability.

9) Fourth down on right. UO icon: -UNTICK- "Show names of approaching players." This, along with Allnames is the shard's biggest laggers. Don't use them. Don't EVER use them during crowded areas. Also "Circle of Transparency." Never use this. Keep it unticked or it can cause huge client-side lag. Only ever use it to find an item you dropped and you can't see because it's behind a wall, then turn it off again. Rest are personal preferences here.

10) Bottom right. Gridded Circle Icon: Personal preference options here only.

11) Having client lockups even after applying 1 to 10?They stop a few, but there is one they can't stop, but you can by typing the command ".resend"

Use .resend whenever you login, teleport/gate/recall to a new area, change text colour, or use .charlist to login with another char. Doesn't need to be used any other time.

Translation Server and its Disablement

A few of us have been experiencing errors that have now been deemed related to UO's crappy "translation server" stuff.

We were able to fix the error, using the following steps:

Those of us who fixed it did so by editing all of the files labeled as uo*.cfg. Those include, for example, uo.cfg, uomax.cfg, uoreg.cfg, and uoupg.cfg. Actually, I think that's all of em.

When editing them, here's what you need to do:

Make TranslationServerAutomaticTranslation=false
Make TranslationServerClickTranslation=off
Make TranslationServer=off
Make TranslationServer=off
Make TranslationServerAutomatic=off
In a nutshell: Anything that says translation and is on or true, set it to off or false.

This will cure symptoms that some have been experiencing such as:

• People appearing with bright gold text even though they don't have their text set to that color.
• People appearing with no names for no apparent reason.
• Text not appearing in the journal even though you know it was said in-game.
• Text appearing under the name of a person who other than the person that said it.
