It's been a little time, but here is the latest...

There's an addition to the Bestiary, detailing the history of the legendary Valorian steeds, thought lost in the past. History is updated, and Maki has finally updated her Cooking page with lots of info, which I have dutifully copied, while also adding a couple of updates that came up since Maki reformatted her page.

More Updates!

First, a message from Moriens:

I'm accepting quest proposals based on your character's background history. Now's the time to look for you long lost parents, find out what happened to your parrot and locate that sock that mysteriously disappeared from your closet (it's actually in an another dimension).

Seriously, I'll be intending to dedicate some time to enhance your personal bios on the weeks to come by running events specifically related to your character.
-However- I only ask one thing. If you submit an idea and it's approved, make sure you try to be around for events related to other characters too. The success of those quests will rely on the interest of everyone else. There's no roleplaying without a group of other characters and that's the one condition for them to happen: They should be pleasant and interesting to everyone else.

To submit your quest proposal, send a private message. I reserve the rights to edit them and suggest alternatives. Or to deny them, in case they are beyond the scope of the tools we have, if they break continuity in any way or are simply too absurd to happen.

There's an addendum from Warder too:

Please don't make any quest requests be "loot requests". If deemed appropriate for the situation, rewards might be handed out, but quests like this should be for the sake of story, not for getting your hands on loot.

(The Hunt for the Father's Lost Sword™ is a good example of that)

And on to the rest of the updates...

Cooking page has been updated with more information about Tea from Rivan. Cartography has been updated with a little more about treasure map sources, also thanks to Rivan. Jarvin has sent in some more Bestiary info - sheep and sewer rats. The history has had the last few posts added, and the Groups page has some more info about the Order of the Silver Serpent and joining it.

More? You bet!

Moriens has been working on a whole new area of entertainment to play with - archeology. See the details and rules of the game here.

We've had confirmation from Kevson that all the useful character related functions like the stat and skill management have been moved into the help menu.

Polymorph has been adjusted so that it isn't overwhelming with Gargoyles having both extreme stats and the ability to equip gear. Now player gargoyles and all the other non-human player races can equip equipment as if human.

Cartography has been updated, with a couple of new items filling in the big blank space between decoding L5 maps at 70 skill, and making Master Charts at 100. Check out the page for info about General Charts and Detailed Charts.

As a result of this, there are already those offering the new items for sale. See the new advertisement by Selene.

Bestiary Blast!

Jarvin was kind enough to send in a whole bunch more Bestiary entries. Enjoy the ones for Polar Bears, Cobras, Crocodiles, Dolphins, Mountain Goats, Gorillas, Jackrabbits, Lambs, and Rabbits.

General Updatingness.

History is updated, such as has happened lately. The Tailoring page has been updated with some new fur items, thanks to details from Rivan and Kevson. Kevson says to 'Keep looking' though, so there must be more in there to find. The Interface project page has been updated regarding the new help menu player management functions. The Services page has a note added about paying the Town Criers for advertising. And the Bestiary has a new entry about the Walrus.

Server Transfer!

Darkheart once again has the privilege of hosting the Legacy server, after the original box in HD's care blew up and Sol took over temporary hosting.

So sayeth DH:

Legacy is back up. :) The move has been completed, and you can now login. I have resumed hosting Legacy after a long absence. I want to give special thanks to Houston who has been a gracious host these last few years, and to Sol who has been the emergency host. Of course to the rest of the staff who has done a simply amazing job, and to you guys for supporting my crazy dream, and keeping this world alive. Thank you. Its glad to be back. Without further ado, edit your login.cfg file to point to "ulegacy.no-ip.org" (without the quotes). We will be updating the downloads page soon with the correct login file soon. Hope to see you in Legacy!

-Darkheart Dragon

If you prefer to just download your own, you can download the zipped login here. The download package for Legacy as a whole now contains the correct login too.

Quick Update

It's only been a couple of days, but events in Legacy got interesting. While I was busy with archiving, some adventurers got busy and took Jhelom back from the vile forces holding the city.

As a result the Trainers page and History pages have been updated with relevant data. There's also a new advertisement, for the new Master Charts, and I moved a bunch of old news off this page and into the stacks.

Latest Updates

Lots of stuff to mention, since it's been a couple of weeks.
Firstly, there have been the usual updates to the History. Further updates have occured for the IRC page, with the latest rules for #Legacy and the general consensus to allow the #Legacy-Official channel to die. The player reps and the means to contact them have been added to the Credits page. The login on the Downloads page has been corrected to point at the temporary version while we wait for the permanent server to be up.

And lastly there have been a bunch of updates for the Bestiary. More pictures from Moriens, and those entries with his pictures have been marked. And Jarvin sent in a whole lot of writeups for other monsters and beasties, which served as the basis for more updates. Enjoy.

Server Updates.

Firstly, there are now three player reps to work with and discuss proposed changes and ideas with the staff: Trithemius, Daelin, and Silver Wisp Dragon. Hopefully this will solve the communication problems some players have with the server staff.

History is updated. New Bio for Serpent. Addition of Horses to the Bestiary. Page outlining the secrecy rules binding both player reps and staff. Updates to the Alchemy and Skills pages, to add info about two new items, details below.

And the following announcement from Kevson:

Updates. Help Menu, Inscription, Alchemy, and Remove Trap.

We've been chatting over a few ideas between the staff and the player reps, and here are the results.

Firstly, there is a new Character Management Options menu accessible from the Help option in your paperdoll.
This menu includes the Polymorph bug fixer, and gives you the ability to reduce your skills from the menu, without having to take a trip out to Dawn. It also allows you to reduce your fame and karma to 0.

Secondly, there is a new item craftable under Inscription. This is Magic Sealing Wax. It needs 1 beeswax as a resource, and 60 Inscription and 40 Magery to craft. The Sealing Wax is used on books to prevent accidental or deliberate editing. It is consumed in the process, and cannot be undone without a Librarian's Key. So be sure you want a particular book locked before you use it.

Third, there is a new item that alchemists can make: explosive bookmarks. The function is pretty selfevident. They need 80 alchemy, a fuse, and volcanic ash to craft.
There is a chance to detect and thus attempt to remove the bookmark from the book, modified by the player's Remove Trap skill. Failure results in an explosion of course. There is also a chance to gain at Remove Trap from working with these things, if you're interested in doing so. At present this is the only way I am aware of to improve the skill. Though we do have longer term plans... ;)
Please note that this is not an invitation for a silly OOC game of leaving exploding books all over Britannia or boobytrapping the libraries for kicks. It is possible for the staff to trace whoever leaves the trapped books lying about, and if it proves necessary we will remove the option of crafting these items and delete those ingame.

And from James:

And some good news: Darkheart has recieved the replacement server. Unfortunately the switchover won't occur until later in the week, because our pinch-hitter is on the road and can't get to the server to transfer the necessary files, but we can look forward to a new, stable, and fast host within a week or so.

More updates!

It only took about 12 hours for someone to notice and post about the change to the site. Ralph Damiani did a new header for the site layout, using his own artwork rather than the UO graphics. I think it looks great. And it's gratifying that people visit the site enough to notice changes like that.

There's another page for the History section, though there are only a few new posts on it so far. The thing keeps on growing...

There are a couple of new pages for the Bestiary section, covering wolves and the big cats.

And Cartography just got an overhall. The relevant page has been updated.

So sayeth Kevson:

The new Cartography interface has been scripted and is now running ingame. Skill requirements for a given map type are unchanged from the old Sphere defaults listed on the Legacy site at present, but now change is possible if it seems desirable in the future.

There is also a new addition, the Master Chart. This acts like the cloth map in the later Ultima games, showing the user the map of Britannia, the same map as the one used in the Moonstone gump. Also like in the games, the map shows the users location, provided that they have a sextant and are on the area covered by the map. This requires one blank map to make, and GM Cartography is required to craft it.

Updates at last!

History section has been updated finally. It's up to 1743 archived posts for anyone who's curious.

Discussion on the board continues about the idea of a player rep, and with requests for ideas and feedback on modifications to the healing skill in general, and resurrection in particular.

The temp server is still running fine, even under larger than typical player numbers caused by the Faire in Britain. No news on when we'll hear something permanent as yet though.

Minor updates to the Bios section (moving Kandheir to Inactive) and Advertising (couple of new entries there.)

A couple of idea I had for the site. Feedback requested.

Both pages are in the concept stage, not anything detailed to be relied on at present, if ever. Feedback to the board is requested.

Server Woes!

The server power supply has died, having burnt out cables and melted pieces of the motherboard in its death throws. Fortunately the hard drive with the current Legacy files was undamaged, so the automatic backups on the system were within an hour of the actual damage point.

Fortunately a temporary server has been established using the backup files. It's at a new location though, so you'll need either to edit your login.cfg file, or download the temporary version here.

If you are going to edit the file directly, change the line

Loginserver=207.69.16.88,2593

to read:

Loginserver=65.60.218.144,2593

On a separate note, there's a lot of discussion on the forum about the running of the server, more than can easily be summarised here. Best to read it methinks.

General Housekeeping.

More updating of the Bios to say who seems to be active or not. History page update. New tinkering item: Deed for a Standing Harp.

And something new in the Alchemy menu, under Poisons. The menu section has been split, and there's a new entry marked ???. So far I haven't worked out what items are required for it. I guess it's a surprise. Until more info comes to light the Alchemy page won't be updated.

Silas is causing trouble...

...but so far things seem to be balanced. He lost his corrupted Silver Tree in Spiritwood and Jaana as his host, but has gained control over the Phoenix Dawnfire. Just how bad that may be is uncertain, but if he's taken a Phoenix as host Silas might be rather difficult to defeat. Jaana is now recovering on Tara.

On more prosaic fronts, there is plenty of history updating done, and a couple of new bios, Brighid and Shano Cortano.

18/2

A bit late on this update...

...courtesy of a computer breakdown, which stopped me from doing anything for the better part of a week.

Nothing much has happened in the way of OOC announcements. IC, Cove got invaded by cyclops. I guess they got a little ticked by the constant hunting.

Sitewise, there's a new book in the Lycaeum, both History and the Cartography page have been updated, as has the list of spells with the info on that new one. Enjoy tracking it down...

Rules and Info Updates

A warning reminder was posted to the boards by Kevson about OOC behaviour and rulesbreaking.

Chaotic neutral characters are fine ingame, so long as they're willing to deal with the IC consequences of IC behaviour, but chaotic neutral player behaviour is another matter, especially when it involves exploiting bugs.

We the staff don't want to play the heavies or be seen as the enemy, but we will not tolerate people deliberately breaking the rules or causing problems either for us or other players, because they're bored or because they think whatever they're doing is fun.

If you want to cause grief to other people, which is what this sort of behaviour amounts to, there're always the OSI servers to play on.

A footnote from Hawke on the subject:

I don't see it as griefing, however it is my firm belief that if a player discovers a bug, he or she should -not- exploit it or go nuts with it, since it's just more work for GMs to take care of later. This is especially true in the case of duping items, and it is highly illegal if it's done to dupe items with the intent of actually -using- those items to make gold, gain skill, etc etc. Which wasn't the case here, obviously.

No, if you encounter a bug, try to reproduce it once at the most, then report it. Please.

Another warning, that possession and use of certain items would be considered rulebreaking was also posted by Hawke, regarding Weighted Gloves and Shields with Insignia.

A more complete listing of such items was posted by Kevson. It can be found here.

Courtesy of Midgard Dragon, the Client Config page has been updated with information on turning off the Translation Server system which causes speech related problems for many players.

Some updates to History, though not much has been posted in the last week. Advertising has been updated, with modifications to Vincent and Elora's bowcrafting prices, and addition of my own crafting price list.

Business Rules Update

A new set of rules for player run public businesses has been posted to the board by Kevson. They're listed here, or for those who don't want to click:

Please note that this does not apply to professions such as bowcrafters, miners, or tinkers, who can operate a personal business out of their own home, but rather to large scale roleplaying establishments such as taverns or inns, which require a large building to be purchased for the establishment.

1) Three people are needed to cooperate in setting up and running the business. This means three players, not three characters belonging to one player. This ensures that the business has some flexibility in operating hours and staff availability, with no single person being overwhelmed by trying to keep the business running.

2) None of these three players should already be involved in running a business. The time constraints in running one appear difficult to manage, and it seems very unlikely that anyone can manage two and do justice to either business.

3) A business of this type is not extra storage for the players running it. It is intended for roleplaying with the Legacy playerbase, and it is expected by the staff that it be used for such. While allowances can be made for absences of the players running the establishment, if the business is not in active use for roleplaying, it will be forfeited. The players involved will have their investment refunded and will lose the business.

The usual history updates have also occurred. A new spell scroll, 'Restoration' has been found, but information on that is being deferred so players can find out about it ICly. And miners now are turning up the odd gemstone in their ore.

Skill Cap implemented!

The ingame Updates scroll gives this message:

Welcome back to Legacy.
The skillcap of 1250 points has now been implemented.
Certain ingame facilities will not be available to those characters who are over that limit.
To manage your skills, use the stones in the valley near Dawn.

Just what those facilities might be is unspecified. I guess people will be reporting that from finding out the hard way...
The stones referred to are in the grassy valley in the mountains near Dawn (OSI's Wind). You can get there easily using a Moonstone.

Valley Location

On other fronts, there are wedding pictures of Daelin and Isadora's wedding at the site of the OSI Shrine of Sacrifice, and the history has been updated. Some modifications to the Carpentry skills too. There's a Chop Logs into Boards option, some new deeds, and I'm told a few skill requirements have been tweaked.

I'm told there are a few other new surprises as well. Just what they might be I guess is up to us players to find out.

A URL of potential interest has been added to the links page. The Hero Machine is fun for making cartoon style pictures of characters. There's a free to trial online version, and a paid for version with full features. See some of the results on Horizons.
