The Map

Movement.

To move about, point the mouse cursor in the direction you want to go, and hold down the right mouse button. If the cursor is close to your character you will walk. If the cursor is quite far away you will run.

Stamina is consumed as you move, the amount being determined by the character's strength, how much weight is being carried, and whether the character is walking or running.

Windows and Gumps.

The UO client opens many windows or gump screens to display information. They can be scrolls or books with information or the insides of containers of various types.

All can be closed by Rightclicking anywhere on the window.

All can be moved by moving the cursor over the gump and holding the left button down and dragging the mouse.

Some gumps, most noticably the Skills list and the Journal, can be resized. To do so click and hold down the left button over the blue gem button at the bottom of the window and move the mouse up and down to resize it to suit.

Some gumps can also be miniaturised down to small graphics. This is done by clicking on the button shaped like a hollow gold diamond with a nearly horizontal line in the middle. The small graphic can be turned back into the gump by double left clicking on it.

Communication.

The Basics:

In it's most basic form, simply type what you wish to say into the line at the bottom of the screen and press Enter to say it. However there are several alternate options as well.

The Functions:

Each of these special functions can be used by typing a specific character, a space then the speech to be said.

Emote:
To Emote, type a Colon ':', then a space, then the phrase. An emote is the description of an action, such as 'Yawns', 'Sneezes', or 'The cats ears go back and it lashes its tail angrily'. They are displayed between asterisks, which are automatically added by the function. Thus the above examples would be seen as *Yawns*. *Sneezes* and *The cats ears go back and it lashes its tail angrily*.

Example:
: laughs
gives the emote *laughs*

Shout:
Normally speech can only be 'heard' and thus is visible only to those on the same screen as the speaker. The shout function, accessed by an exclamation mark '!' followed by a space then the text to be shouted allows the words to be seen from several screens away. They are displayed at the bottom left of the screen of the people hearing it.

Example:
! Die Fool
will allow people several screens away to 'hear' your words.

Whisper:
The Whisper function, accessed by using the semi-colon key ';' then space makes the words spoken following it unseeable more than a few paces away from the whispering character.

Example:
; Quiet
Will allow only characters in a few paces of the speaker to see the word Quiet.

Text Colours:

To change the colour of your text, either open your paperdoll and click the Options button or press 'Alt O' to open the options screen.

Display MenuSelect the second tab down on the right hand side, with the eye symbol, and scroll down the Display menu. When you reach the squares labled 'Speech Color' and 'Emote Color' click on them. select the colour you want your speech to be, and then press the 'Okay' button in the colour menu. Press Okay again in the Options menu to save the colours.

It is advisable to test the colours of the speech and emotes at this point. Some colours may seem good at first, but are hard to read for others. Checking how they look in the Journal (Alt J) is a good idea too. If the colours are difficult to see, it is easier on everyone to simply change them again.

If you have multiple characters, you will have problems with different text colours. In order to fix the text/emote colours for a given character, you need to reset them for each character slot you have in use. Thus if you have three characters, you need to set up the speech colour for each character after loading them from each position on the login list.

Translator Bug:

There is a bug which sometimes causes speech to become invisible on an erratic basis. Here is Warder's explanation on how to fix it.

UO has by default a problem with different language versions (of Windows, I think, not the actual UO installation) that sometimes causes lines of text to disappear, seemingly at random. You'll notice that this might happen if someone else's text shows up in a bright yellow, and their emotes show up without their names attached when looking in the journal.

There are two ways to solve this.

Method 1:

Turn off all translation options in game, then close the client and log out. Open the uo.cfg file in your Ultima Online/Desktop//Ultima Legacy/ directory and change the following two lines

TranslationServerAutomaticTranslation=true
TranslationServerClickTranslation=on

into this

TranslationServerAutomaticTranslation=false
TranslationServerClickTranslation=off

Then save the uo.cfg file and start the game as normal.

Method 2:

The other way is simply opening up the uo.cfg file and changing

UnicodeSpeech=off

to

UnicodeSpeech=on

or, if the line isn't there, add "UnicodeSpeech=on" to the end of the file and save it.

The Paperdoll.

It is advisable to keep your paperdoll open, as it has many shortcuts to other displays. To open your paperdoll, double left click your cursor while it is over you, or press Alt-P. If you are mounted on a horse, use Alt-P only. The options from the Paperdoll are Help, Options, Logout, Journal, Skills, Chat, War/Peace, and Status. You select them by left clicking on the buttons down the right side of the paperdoll picture of your character.

Help Option:

This option gives a list of certain things you can do.

1) Page a GM.
Don't use this frivolously please. Full details about what you should do when paging are in the Rules.

2) Web Menu.
Gives a list of links. Selecting one then pressing continue loads the page in your default browser.

3) Info.
This just tells you what version of Sphere the server is running. For reference, it's the Win32 version of 0.51a.

4) Server Status.
This tells you a little about the Server at the time you check. Most significantly it tells you how many clients are currently connected to Legacy.

5) Travel the Ether.
This is a teleport function. It is intended for use if your character gets stuck somehow and cannot escape without 'divine intervention'. Falling off a cliff which you cannot walk up is an example. Following the maze it takes you to will eventually get you to a safe spot on the main continent.

6) Player Management Options:
These are a group of OOC options for adjusting your character. They are all irrevocable, so use them with care.

a) Form Restore:
There is an annoying bug with the Polymorph spell which occasionally leaves the user permanently stuck in the form taken. This option allows a human player to fix the problem without GM intervention. Misuse of the function is not acceptable.

b) Skill Management:
Allows you to lower, not raise, your character's skills to stay within the skillcap.

c) Stat Management:
Allows you to lower, not raise, your character's basic statistics - strength, dexterity, and intelligence.

d) Karma Reset:
Allows you to reset your ingame Karma to 0.

e) Fame Reset:
Allows you to reset your ingame Fame to 0, removing such OOC things as the Lord/Lady titles.

f) Murder Count Reset:
Allows you to set the number of player kills to 0. The UO murderer system is considered OOC.

7) Downloads.
This menu gives you information about the Legacy specific downloads. There are specific rules about distributing this information or the files themselves. The short version of them is 'Don't'.

The Options Option:

This is the main center for adjusting and altering your client configuration. Information about specific areas is included in various places in this page.
Using Alt-O has the same effect as this button.

The Logout Option:

This simply shuts down the client and quits the game. Note that outside a guarded area your character will linger ingame for a period. This means you should find a safe place, then hide before logging out.
Using Alt-X has the same effect as this button.

The Journal Option:

This opens a page which shows server messages and speech that happens around you. It is very handy for keeping track of who says what in a confused situation.
Using Alt-J has the same effect as this button.

It is possible to save your journal to disc permanently. Here are Warder's instructions on how:

You have to change a few settings in your uo.cfg files, and here's how!

First of all, you should be aware that you have a bunch of uo.cfg files... there's one in your main Ultima Online directory, and one for each character you have in the Ultima Online/Desktop directory. The "main" uo.cfg contains the settings each new character you make get by default. You should probably change both.

After opening uo.cfg with a text editor, you need to add these lines, or if they're already there change them so they match this:

SaveJournal=on
JournalSaveFile=C:\journal.txt

Of course, "C:\journal.txt" can be substituted for whatever path you want to have there. I think that should be enough, but some have said they've had to actually create a file called journal.txt by hand before it has started logging.

Warder also notes that there is a very good tool for working with the journal files here.

The Skills Option:

Using this button opens a scroll showing your character's skills. It is sorted into sections to make them easier to keep track of. To open one of the groups to see the skills within, left click your cursor on the arrowhead to the left of the group name.
Using Alt-K has the same effect as this button.

Skill Group Management:

If you wish to create a new group for specific skills, click your left mouse button on the words New Group at the bottom of the scroll.
To delete a group select the group by clicking your left mouse button on it once, then press delete. Any skills in the group will be moved to the topmost group left.
To rename a skill group doubleleft click on the group name and then type to change what you desire.

Using Skills:

Some of the skills have blue buttons next to them. These are skills you can use directly from the menu. Left click on the button and do as instructed. The other skills are used ingame via other means.

The Chat Option:

This button gives you access to the ingame Chat system. This allows you to communicate with other players.The Chat system will be discussed in more detail below.
Using Alt-T has the same effect as this button.

The War/Peace Option:

This button toggles you between War Mode and Peace Mode. If it is red and says War you are in War Mode. If it is blue and says Peace you are in Peace Mode.
Using Alt-C has the same effect as this button.

In War Mode if you double left click on a character you will attack it. The distance from which you attack depends on the weapon you are using.

The Status Option:

This opens a window which shows you basic information about your character, strength, intelligence, dexterity, health, mana, stamina, your current amount of gold, your armour rating, and the weight you are carrying.
Using Alt-S has the same effect as this button.

The Map

There is a small ingame map that shows your immediate vicinity. It has two sizes, small and large. Press ALT-R to make it appear in the small form, then ALT-R again to make it large.
